Setup remote access to Time Capsule

even without the mobile.me feature introduced with firmware 7.4.1, which is – as a few of us know – not 100% compatible to the first Time Capsules released to the market.

Primary sign of this incompatibility is the drop of its Wifi-Connectivity and the need to perform hard resets (un-plug) the Time Capsule to overcome the connection timeouts. The only remedy is to fall back to 7.3.2.
In the meantime I’m currently working with someone from Apple who is working on the ticket I’ve raised, trying to find a solution/cause of this …

Initially I desperately looked for a way to directly connect to the Time Capsule harddisk from the Internet, but with no success. Only recently – after finding some mor background on the mobile.me way of doing it – I found a way to install it with 7.3.2 aswell.

First Step was to down-grade to 7.3.2

Then, using the KeyChain Access tool and looking for the key for “back to my mac” – in my case it was sufficient to look for “bac”

This way – you get the “User Name” and “Password” (click the Show Password box) to be entered for the Global Time Capsule access data – including the proper way to enter it in case your User Name contains not standard characters.

Machine Name is the Local Hostname

Hostname is “Machine Name”.”User Name”

Password is the above retreived Password

No finally set up a dynamic DNS client and access it via afp:// protocol – there is no need to establish a portforwarding as the Time Capsule disk is on the Time Capsule itsself (same IP)

And Ready … you will be asked for Username / Password the first time you access the disk.
